What can the Hunter learn from the world’s most innovative brands?

1:00 pm1:45 pm
- BANQUET ROOM

What do Taylor Swift, Microsoft and Tesla all have in common? They have all massively disrupted industries by being brave, bold and doing things differently.

And they all started somewhere. As the world’s most valuable brand, Apple’s success has been driven by one enduring idea since it was started by two mates in Steve Jobs’ garage.

What critical decisions do successful innovators make along the way that take their brands global? Google, Netflix and Atlassian. These global brands were once start-ups operating out of a shed or home office and pitching like their next meal depended on it. They’ve changed the game but not without challenges. They have constantly adapted, evolved and never given up, but the DNA of their brands has remained the same.

From grass roots to global best practice, we’ll share the top 10 learnings from these global innovators. Their failures, their secret sauce and success stories. We’ll apply a local lens to share what the Hunter can learn to continue to punch above its weight.

On our panel hear the secrets from global brands with worldwide reputations from brand and innovation experts Guts Creative and Tomorrow Strategy Co.

Enabling people-centric innovation for the energy transition

1:00 pm1:45 pm
- CLEAN ENERGY TENT

Dr Stephen Craig will be presenting on the role of the National Energy Analysis Centre in catalysing innovation and energy transformation in the Hunter and beyond.

With dramatic shifts ongoing across the energy sector and regional economies like the Hunter, energy-related innovation is needed more than ever before. The opportunity is strengthened by rapid developments in adjacent areas like digital that offer new capabilities, and novel constructs in ‘energy nexus areas’ across traditional boundaries that show great promise.

The innovation potential rests on involving communities and energy users, both residential and industrial, in solution design and decision-making, and situational awareness of the innovation in a broader system context. We need to trial and learn in faster cycles, more easily, and with greater sharing of data and insights than has previously been the case.

To help catalyse innovation and support the energy transformation, CSIRO is building the National Energy Analysis Centre (NEAC), that integrates human and system perspectives. NEAC will consist of:

  • A Living Lab – to better understand people, behaviours, and test new innovative products and services in thousands of real homes and businesses across Australia.
  • A Data Nexus – to pull together the data needed from across systems in a coherent way, so analysis and modelling can be done that considers the whole picture.
  • An Insights Platform – to bring transparency to the change, showing reports on progress but also sharing the innovation that is happening so that work is not siloed.

NEAC will be for all researchers, innovators, governments, and communities. It will support more place-based, community-driven innovation in regions like the Hunter, making local outcomes nationally interoperable.

Trevor Power will be outlining the role of the Net Zero Economy Agency in leading transition across the nation.

The Truth About Start Ups

1:00 pm1:45 pm
- ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TENT

This session will be a 15 minute keynote form Norman Ballard, founder of Senquip, followed by a moderated discussion with RAM Manufacturing.

Norman Ballard, founder of Senquip, is a serial entrepreneur and also founded and exited Hummingbird Electronics, a contractor to the defence industry. Over many years of founding and growing businesses, his experience has proven that not every start up has to 10 x in its first year, raise millions of venture capital, or make it onto the Shark Tank to be counted a success. There are businesses founded every day that grow headcount, deliver valuable products to their community, hire staff and create economic opportunity, and these are the small and medium enterprises that make up 70% of the NSW Economy.

Norman argues that a business that operates for 20 years, provides an income for a family and makes a contribution to its community is just as laudable as the 100x SaaS startup, and the more we realise the value in starting and growing business that make a contribution to our community, the more entrepreneurs will forge their own path in the Hunter.

Joining the discussion, RAM Manufacturing, an early stage start up and Alumni of the university of Newcastle’s I2N, that has created a novel solution for the carpet flooring industry. As a strong prospect for circular manufacturing of waste plastics, Echidna Strip has the potential to be a significant and sustainable improvement upon current flooring installation techniques.

Moderated by I2N’s Siobhan Curran, this panel discussion with the audience will highlight the reality of founding a business, the barriers to succes and the tenacity required to make it work.  The session promises to offer practical strategies and forward-thinking solutions for businesses looking to harness the collaborative ecosystem that exists in the Hunter to drive innovation, and ensures this will be an session for founders and aspiring business owners  in the industrial and manufacturing sectors.

Innovation ecosystems: advancing the conversation for place-based transformation

1:00 pm1:45 pm
- CONCERT HALL

Innovation ecosystems create opportunities, but those opportunities are not always equal for everyone. In this open conversation, we will consider how innovation ecosystems can both help and hinder, create opportunities and embed systemic barriers, and reinforce the very siloes they are designed to disrupt. Using examples from both theory and practical examples, we explore how innovation ecosystems in regional Australia have evolved, contributing factors of innovation ecosystem success and stagnation, governance structures, and measurement frameworks. The conversation will lead to a discussion on the future of place-based development.

The Unseen Heroes of Energy – Gravity and Green Waste

1:00 pm1:45 pm
- TECHNOLOGY TENT

The abundance of wind and solar energy is commonly acknowledged and frequently utilised in global energy transition efforts, however, there are energy sources available to us every day that we don’t often recognise, let alone harness for their potential to contribute to our increasingly demanding energy mix.

Gravity and green waste are two energy sources that are being harnessed by Green Gravity, joining us from the Illawarra region, and Goterra, whose operations are based in Canberra and expanding rapidly across the nation. Using abandoned mine voids and black fly larvae to create energy, the simplicity of concept that exists in compliment to the complexity of their technology is fascinating. We will also hear from SEATA, whose technology is a scalable, integrated, continuous operation, production system with quick start-up/shut-down operability which represents a step change in the thermal treatment of carbonaceous feedstocks to simultaneously  produce valuable, unadulterated syngas and biochar at scale from the one plant with minimal harmful emissions.

Measuring the Impact of Regional Innovation

2:00 pm2:45 pm
- BANQUET ROOM

Where are the strengths of the Hunter region’s ‘innovation ecosystem’, and where are there opportunities to enable it to enhance the region’s growth?  An innovation ecosystem describes the network of organisations, venues, infrastructure and programs that provide the conditions for entrepreneurial activity and development of new ideas, products and services.

The value of innovation to regions like the Hunter continues to increase in importance, as regional communities seek to diversify their economies and respond to the demands of transformation and transition. Measurement frameworks for understanding and tracking activity within innovation ecosystems tend to focus on large city settings, like Sydney or Silicon Valley.  They are rarely designed or suited specifically for a regional context.

Urbis is working with Hunter IF to develop a framework for measuring regional innovation. We need your input to identify what is important to measure and to agree on indicators that will help us make decisions about products or services to develop, training and support activities that are needed, or investments to make.  We are seeking to develop approaches to visualisation that will give us a clearer picture of regional innovation activity, support, barriers and opportunities.

Join this workshop to contribute to an approach for measuring the Hunter’s innovation ecosystem. In a collaborative session you will assess and enhance the draft frameworks and visualisation prototypes emerging from the project. Your input will help shape the growth of the Hunter ecosystem and innovation in regions more generally.

This work is part-funded by a grant from Origin Energy’s Eraring Community Investment Fund.

The Hunter’s future requires more than technology and productivity

9:45 am10:30 am
- CONCERT HALL

The reality is that we are at the end of a long productivity cycle, and we all know that the old ways of innovating and improving business efficiency are producing less results. The world is changing in economic terms, in social terms and in human terms.

The future of innovation lies in the radically simple/difficult concept of embracing this complexity, rather than resisting it. Drawing on cutting edge economics and business theory, Professor Sanders, as a Worimi man, also draws on Indigenous knowledge of this country, and the way the combination of new science and ancient knowledge systems point a way through to a positively transformed future Hunter.
