SmartPlay aims to bring data to life – supporting Newcastle Citizens to make changes to their own digital surroundings, and shape their own Smart City.
SmartPlay presents The Selfie Factory, which is a media installation created by Ralph Kenke in collaboration with Elmar Trefz. It offers a tangible representation of the scale and quality of online data, using a real-time stream of Instagram selfies printed on receipt paper. The Selfie Factory creates a temporary visual experience of online behaviour, aims to raise awareness of the contemporary phenomenon of the digital self-portrait (selfie). It is an exploration of the experienced divide of online spaces and physical places, and has triggered some valuable discussions on the subject of personal data and the responsibilities that we carry when engaging in online activities.
